About Sturgeon River Provincial Park

Sturgeon River Provincial Park is located in the Sudbury District of Ontario, flanking the scenic Sturgeon River. The park spans a rugged landscape featuring a dramatic canyon carved by the river, with steep cliffs and rocky outcrops dominating the terrain. This remote wilderness area preserves intact boreal forest ecosystems consisting mainly of mixed stands of pine, spruce, and poplar, supporting diverse habitats for rich wildlife including moose, black bear, beaver, and numerous bird species. The river and its associated tributaries provide excellent freshwater habitats, making the park a destination for paddlers and anglers alike. Established in 1989, the park aims to protect this unique canyon landscape while allowing for recreational activities that minimally impact the environment. Recreation focuses on wilderness canoeing, kayaking, backcountry camping, and hiking along several informal trails. The natural rock formations and small waterfalls along the river create picturesque scenery appealing to photographers and nature enthusiasts. Visitor appeal is strengthened by the park’s isolation, providing a quiet setting far from urban development and a true wilderness experience in Ontario’s forests. The surrounding area holds historical significance with indigenous peoples utilizing the river corridor for centuries and early fur trade routes crossing nearby. The park does not feature extensively developed infrastructure, emphasizing a primitive outdoor experience. Visitors can expect solitude, pristine waters, and abundant wildlife with the challenge of navigating rugged terrain and limited services. Sturgeon River Provincial Park remains an important conservation site maintaining the integrity of this ecologically sensitive river canyon environment.
